This degree teaches performance skills and provides knowledge for careers requiring general musicianship.

Join our Ensembles! In the MSJ Department of Music, we believe in musical service to the University, the community, and each other. In addition to Music majors and minors, we offer experiences for all musicians in University Band, University Singers, and Orchestra. Students are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue professional careers and graduate study. Structural, cognitive, and aesthetic aspects of music are investigated and cultivated through theoretical and historical studies. Musicianship is expanded and enhanced through vocal/instrumental ensembles and private study.

Applications for theoretical studies in music are enhanced through state-of-the-art technology in ear-training and sight singing. Music majors perform throughout the year in formal concerts with the University Band and the University Singers, Student Recitals, Mass Ensemble, Steel Drum Band, and are often featured on Open Mic Night. An audition is required for initial acceptance into this program.

The Music Department is committed to training a versatile, competitive, and marketable student via a renowned faculty and advanced curriculum. Students will have the opportunity to observe and participate in all facets of the music industry; from studio recording to performing in Broadway musicals; from private lesson teaching to professional orchestra rehearsals. The mission of the Music Department is to foster comprehensive musicianship that teaches students to hear, comprehend, write, and perform various musical styles. Students are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue professional careers and graduate study.

We offer two concentrations: Music Education and Music Pedagogy.

 Our Music Education program prepares the student to be a productive and competitive music educator. When course work is completed, a provisional multi-age license (ages 3-21) is available through the Education Department. This certifies graduates to teach in private, parochial and public schools.

Benefits of the Program:

Students majoring in music can earn their Bachelor of Arts in music in three years. A three year program allows students to complete their degree faster, move towards a graduate degree earlier, or have the time to pursue a double major. Students have the opportunity to study with in-demand musicians who are active in the regional performance scene, as well in the international academic field. A low student-to-faculty ratio sets the stage for true mentoring relationships to develop.

Professional musicians who are active in the regional and national performance scenes, as well as in the international academic field guide students in their study of Music. A low student-to-faculty ratio sets the stage for valuable mentoring relationships. While at the Mount, students will engage in performances in academic, athletic, religious, and community settings. Large ensembles, chamber ensembles, and opportunities for individual performances abound. Many students build experience in Church Music, and all students have the opportunity to serve communities in need. Outreach to retirement homes, underserved communities, and educational venues are a central part of the MSJ Music major experience.
