Students with a dual major in math and chemistry develop critical thinking, observation and logic skills.
An experiment you perform may find new ways to manufacture artificial organs and medical supplies. Your innovation could provide clean drinking water to third work countries. Your curiosity might lead to a solution to pollution control. Are you analytical, inventive, curious, strategic and methodical, detail oriented, dedicated and ambitious? If so, a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics & Chemistry may be the degree for you.
With a dual major in mathematics and chemistry, students will complete rigorous coursework in both disciplines. By focusing on these two subjects, students will become well-rounded, critical thinkers. The combination of scientific observation and logical thinking will be a tremendous asset when marketing to future employers.
Featured Courses:
The program consists of 76-77 credit hours in courses such as:
- Differential Equations
- Introduction to Math Computing
- Mathematical Modeling
- Analytical Chemistry
- Physical Chemistry.
Why Mathematics and Chemistry at the Mount?
- Extensive experience in different types of chemistry and physics labs
- Exposure to pure and applied mathematics for a well-rounded background
- Departmental Scholarships and Awards to assist students who go above and beyond
- Small class sizes, personal attention and a welcoming atmosphere for a healthy learning environment
- Individual math research as well as a co-op experience to prepare you for your future career.
Career Potential:
This degree leads to exciting new career opportunities including:
- Biomathematician
- Biostatistician
- Chemical Technician
- Industrial chemist
- Research associate.
Or with a graduate degree, you can become a chemical engineer or a biomedical engineer.
Hands-on Experience:
Under the guidance of faculty, Mathematics/Chemistry students at the Mount participate in chemistry research. Many research students are co-authors on published chemistry research papers while others present their work at regional professional meetings.
Cooperative education provides real-world experience in industrial settings or research labs in Greater Cincinnati. These co-op positions have often led to full-time positions for our students.
Facilities:
There are two computer labs dedicated solely to the Departments of Mathematics and Computing where students will be exposed to MATLAB, a mathematical software for high-powered computing needed in upper level courses and senior research.
The Department of Chemistry houses a state-of-the-art instrument suite that provides students with hands-on experience using instruments such as IR, NMR, HPLC and GC-MS. These instruments are incorporated into chemistry lab courses as well as student research opportunities.
Alumni Profile:
Kurtis, a 2008 alum, completed the dual major in chemistry/mathematics and went on to complete the master's program in chemical engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He is currently working as a project/process engineer in the Cincinnati area.
